Google Ads tool comparison | Updated July 28, 2026

Best Google Ads tools for small accounts, ranked by the job they do

For a small Google Ads account, the best tool stack is usually Google's free one. Another subscription does not fix weak search terms, a poor landing page, broken lead tracking, or slow follow-up.

Best Google Ads tool by task

Keyword Planner is the best first tool. Ads Editor matters when bulk changes become risky.

Use Keyword Planner to research demand and cost ranges. Use Ads Editor for reviewed bulk changes. Use Looker Studio only when native reports cannot answer the business question. Use Performance Planner after conversion data is credible and the campaigns are eligible.

How this list is ranked: 35% usefulness to a small account, 25% ability to prevent wasted spend, 20% setup burden, 10% reporting clarity, and 10% whether the output can be checked against real lead quality.

Four useful tools

Plan, edit, forecast, and report.

These four tools cover most small and midsize Google Ads work. They do not charge a separate subscription at the standard level. The media budget is still separate.

#3 Best free custom reporting

Looker Studio

Choose Looker Studio when Google Ads, analytics, call, ecommerce, or lead data must be combined into one repeatable view.

Choose it
The standard product is free and can make cross-source reporting easier to scan.

The dashboard will repeat platform numbers without qualified leads, sales, or revenue.

Build the smallest report that answers a decision. A large dashboard can still hide a bad campaign.

#4 Best for eligible campaign forecasts

Google Performance Planner

Choose Performance Planner after the account has credible conversion data and an eligible campaign needs budget or target scenarios.

Tracking is unreliable, lead values are wrong, or the campaign is not eligible.

Use it for a scenario, not as a promise of leads, revenue, or profit.

Google Keyword Planner: setup, limits, and where to look
What it does
Keyword Planner finds related search terms and estimates searches, competition, bid ranges, clicks, and cost for a selected market.
Price
Free inside Google Ads. An Ads account and billing setup may be required. Running ads costs extra.
Where to look
Open Tools > Planning > Keyword Planner. Use Keyword ideas for demand and Forecasts for estimated traffic and cost.
Limits
Volumes are rounded and forecasts are not promises. Low-volume terms may not appear. Results still depend on the ad, bid, page, location, season, and buyer.
Alternatives
Google Trends, Semrush Keyword Magic Tool, or Ahrefs Keywords Explorer.

  4. Remove research, job-seeker, DIY, and irrelevant product terms.
  5. Move only commercial terms into a plan and inspect the forecast.
Looker Studio: setup, limits, and where to look
What it does
Looker Studio turns Google Ads and other data into shareable dashboards with scorecards, trends, filters, and campaign summaries.
Price
Looker Studio Standard is no-cost. Pro is paid per licensed user through Google Cloud billing; check the live signup price.
Where to look
Use Resource > Manage added data sources for connections. Use each chart's Setup panel for dimensions, metrics, filters, and dates.
Limits
It reports but does not optimize. Bad joins and mismatched metric definitions can create false totals. Data freshness varies by connector.
Alternatives
Google Ads Reports, GA4 Explorations, or AgencyAnalytics.

The useful small-account tool stack has no separate software fee

Google Ads Editor, Keyword Planner, Performance Planner, and Looker Studio Standard do not require a separate tool subscription. Google Ads spend and any implementation or paid connector work are separate.

A $500 ad budget does not need a $500 tool stack. Spend the time on the offer, search terms, landing page, tracking, and fast lead follow-up.

Start here

Fix measurement before adding software.

An ad tool cannot rescue a bad offer, a weak landing page, or a phone that is not answered. Confirm the conversion action and lead-quality check before automating anything.

Step 1

Define the useful action

Choose the action that matters: a qualified call, quote request, booked appointment, order, or sale. Do not optimize for page views.

Step 2

Use Google's free tools

Build demand with Keyword Planner, edit in Ads or Editor, plan only eligible campaigns, and report the result with Ads reports or Looker Studio.

Step 3

Read lead quality

Review the actual search term, page, call, form, sale, and cost. A cheap lead that never becomes a job is not cheap.

Keep it current

Where to look when a tool or rule changes.

Prices, screens, ad rules, and AI search behavior change. We keep short dated updates in Pulse and real observations in Notes. Use this guide for the setup. Use those pages for what changed.

Google changes campaign eligibility and planning features. Performance Planner removed Display and Video planning and impression-share metric plans on March 9, 2026.
