A confirmed update, with a specific start time
Google began its September 2026 spam update at 9:15 a.m. Pacific on September 24. The announcement applies globally and across languages. As checked October 2, the incident page had not announced completion.
A change in the same week deserves investigation. The timing alone does not establish its cause.
Use page and query evidence before making a sitewide change
Our recommendation is to compare consistent Search Console views: the same country, device, search type and comparable date ranges. Identify which pages and queries changed, then check whether site releases, tracking changes or seasonal demand also changed during that period.
Keep a dated copy of the evidence before editing. If only one part of the site moved, a broad rewrite can erase the information needed to understand what happened.
Review the actual policies and record what you find
Google advises sites seeing changes after a spam update to review its spam policies. Its guidance says improvements can depend on systems recognizing compliance over a period of months; a quick recovery is not promised.
We recommend describing any finding precisely: the affected URLs, the practice, the policy and the correction. A generic label such as “AI content” is not a substitute for that review. Do not delete useful pages merely because the calendar matches an update.

What to check next
- Save the official rollout start date alongside your search report.
- Compare the same country, device, search type and page/query groups.
- Check indexing, technical changes and deployment history before attributing a loss.
- Review the cited spam policies and document specific findings.
- Check the status dashboard for completion before drawing a final rollout comparison.
Sources and scope
Checked October 2: Google’s dashboard lists the September 24 start and an expected rollout of up to two weeks, with no completion notice on the incident page. This does not establish that any particular site was affected.
The announcement is confirmed by the source below. Practical checks in this article are Stan Consulting's recommendations.
